Rubber flooring brings myriad of benefits to children’s hospital expansion.
To create a patient-centered module of healthcare, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital started from the ground up. In choosing rubber flooring, the Hollywood, Florida, facility met expansion goals to provide a quiet, healing space that minimized interruptions to the healing process.
The new patient- and family-centered expansion brings the hospital to 180,000 square feet and increases capacity to 204 patient beds. nora® rubber flooring covers a majority of the hospital’s interior space, featuring noraplan environcare™ and norament® 926 grano in colorful hues that bring energy and inspiration to public areas and patient spaces.
While the flooring’s vibrant design makes a memorable statement, building acoustics are less pronounced – and building officials wouldn’t have it any other way. “The quiet the flooring provides is paramount to the recovery of the children we care for,” says Jesus Sardinas, director of facilities.
Increased efficiencies in floor maintenance not only offer cost savings, but enhance safety for patients and staff. “nora is tremendously advantageous in terms of time savings, safety and the reduction of chemicals used in the building,” adds William Lubin, director of environmental services. “It’s safer, as it doesn’t require any coatings or strippers. That’s because stepping on a floor covered with a stripping agent can easily result in a fall,” he continues. “We are also able to better utilize our maintenance team’s time, allowing them to focus on tasks other than caring for the floors.”
The elimination of floor coating processes has even improved reactions to air quality. “We’ve had staff and patients in the past who experienced allergic reactions to the chemicals we had to use. We don’t have that challenge any longer with nora,” says Lubin.
nora flooring also offers added cushion underfoot, an important consideration for nursing staff who work around the clock on their feet.
In all, the hospital expansion was able to meet their goals to provide quiet, comfort and safety for young patients and staff through flooring that offered ease of maintenance and long-term durability.
