Officials at Muskingum University turned to nora® to create a welcoming atmosphere throughout the school’s bustling new student center.
As officials at Muskingum University in New Concord, OH, set out to build a new student center, they knew they wanted a state-of-the-art space that supported the education of the whole student. But it also had to serve as a spacious, welcoming gathering space for the community. The resulting 23,000-square-foot Walter K. Chess Center is used for meetings, social gatherings and physical fitness.
Designers and officials were committed to sustainability as they contemplated custom flooring solutions that would give each level of the center its own unique identity. Hygiene and ease of maintenance was also a consideration, especially in the high-traffic fitness spaces. “We were looking for a floor that promotes good health by preventing the growth of various bacteria,” says Anne Steele, president of Muskingum University.
Designers and officials turned to nora to provide flooring throughout the Chess Center. On the building’s second level, 9 mm nora® grano and 992 grano provide the performance and durability that an active fitness center demands. One advantage of the flooring is that heavy free weights can be set down without leaving gouges or indentations. The flooring’s slip resistance ensures security underfoot so students can work out safely.
Maintenance staff have found they can efficiently clean the floors and prevent the growth of bacteria commonly found in fitness centers. School officials are impressed by how the flooring’s pleasing aesthetics and hygienic properties contribute to the Chess Center’s healthy, calming atmosphere.
The Chess Center enhances the campus and enriches the lives of students who use it. Inside, the flooring has given the space a unifying, healthy look and feel. Learn more about how flooring benefits a healthful environment in the complete project profile.
