The renovation of P.S. duPont Elementary School in Delaware preserves the past while bringing the facility into the future.

P.S. duPont Elementary School in Wilmington, Delaware, is part of the Brandywine School District. The school enrolls approximately 750 students in early childhood/kindergarten programs through sixth grade. Originally built in the 1930s and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, school officials and designers were charged with preserving the building’s historical integrity throughout the renovation. At the time, the $44 million elementary school project was the largest renovation project in the state’s history.

The building was in need of updates that would introduce new technology, energy-saving features and sustainable design elements, all while maintaining the school’s rich tradition. After a two-year test of six different floor coverings, the district chose noraplan environcare™ for the school’s busy hallways and several classrooms.

Officials found that nora® flooring was the best choice to withstand muddy shoes and heavy foot traffic in busy entrance areas. The flooring’s design and color scheme complements the school’s classic look, while introducing the durability needed in a busy environment. The noise-dampening properties of noraplan® help create a quiet atmosphere for young learners.

The biggest beneficiary of the flooring’s efficient maintenance and low life cycle costs is student and educators. The district was awarded $90,000 to purchase floor care products for its 18 buildings. The finish-free maintenance regimen of nora allowed officials at P.S. duPont to use the money elsewhere on education needs. “The less we spend on floor care products, the more we’re able to spend on education,” says John Read, construction manager for Brandywine School District.
