Patients, caregivers and staff enjoy increased comfort and efficiency in a new facility.

Albany Medical Center’s new 325,000-square-foot Patient Pavilion was built in response to a growing number of patients in Albany, New York. This new space offers same-day surgery, 20 new operating rooms, a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), 60 surgical beds and 80 additional beds. When it came to surface coverings to outfit the project, the administrators had to consider several specific challenges and departmental demands – patient and caregiver comfort, long-term durability and daily upkeep, among them.

“I considered many different floors, attended seminars, talked to various vendors, etc.,” says Don Stichter, vice president of facilities for Albany Medical Center. After conducting research and testing, the hospital selected noraplan environcare™ flooring for the corridors, sterile areas between operating rooms, nurses stations, patient rooms, labs and closets. “The fact that nora® floors do not require waxing, yet maintain their good looks, appealed to me,” says Stichter of the decision.

The streamlined cleaning routine has played a big part in how efficiently the busy new facility runs. The Environmental Services team can turn rooms quickly and safely, a result of the wax-free and slip-resistant surface. New employees get acclimated quickly to the maintenance protocol, because there’s no special training on cleaning solutions or equipment.

The nursing staff is also experiencing how nora premium rubber flooring makes their job easier. “We really wanted to pay attention to the needs of our nurses. The added underfoot cushion helps relieve foot and leg fatigue,” Stichter says. Another important area of focus for the medical center was patient comfort. The noise-dampening effect of noraplan environcare helps create a quiet, recuperative atmosphere, especially for sensitive NICU patients.

The hospital has been pleased with the performance of the flooring in the Patient Pavilion, leading them to use nora going forward. As Stitcher puts it, “There’s no reason to change once you find something that works.” See how nora premium rubber flooring works well for patients and staff at Albany Medical Center in the full project profile.
